Role Title and Location: FPGA Designer - Stevenage
Job Ref No: P6768
Reports to: Group Head FPGA Design
Salary: Up to £55k DOE + Excellent Benefits Package
The Opportunity
FPGA’s are one of the most crucial elements in many of our subsystems and our FPGA designers undertake the whole of the development process from negotiation of requirements and initial design architecture, through to the formal validation and verification of the design.  Many designs have demanding safety requirements so our engineers must be able to rigorously verify their designs and demonstrate this to the Safety Officers. This work is extremely challenging but incredibly rewarding.
The Role
FPGA’s are a critical element of our designs and are often complex and challenging.  Our designers, utilising the latest technologies form Xilinx, Actel etc are not just coders; they have the skills and capabilities to implement complex low level Image processing algorithms for Seekers to Actuator control functions and all shades in between.  Our designs often incorporate devices with processing cores and our designers have to establish close links with the Systems and Software design functions to get the most from these devices
What’s in it for you?
The range of demanding requirements, the use of the latest technologies and the expectations to deliver to demanding timescales provides a demanding environment for engineers who want to show they have a high performance attitude and the desire to reach the highest capability in this demanding field.
The scope to tackle technically demanding projects, develop new capabilities in all aspects, including leadership is an opportunity that should not be missed by any aspiring engineer.  Opportunities to progress to higher grades, including our formal Technical Expert grades provide further motivation for those particularly motivated by the technology route.
Technology in this area is advancing rapidly. To ensure we maintain our capability we join with our FPGA colleagues in France in preparing the next generation re-usable designs via demanding research programmes.
What’s great about the team?
The FPGA team is a functional team which is mostly collocated together, maximising the exchange of knowledge and ideas.  The team is always stretching the boundaries of the technology in response to ever growing demands for higher capability within our systems.
This team has to be agile to react to project demands such as specific features needed for trials. Only the most dedicated and adaptable engineers can meet these challenges.
This team has expanded rapidly over the past couple of years in response to a growing workload which continues to grow.
What are we looking for?
  • Ideally we are looking candidates that are degree qualified or equivalent
  • Candidates will need to demonstrate their capability through the completion of several complex FPGA designs using  Xilinx, and/or Altera FPGA devices (including SoC configurations using Power PC or ARM cores) preferably in a defence or associated environment
  • Knowledge of Image processing and Safety related design in the context of FPGA’s and the verification of such devices
  • Candidates will be able to show that they keep their knowledge of the trends in FPGA technologies up to date
  • Deep and demonstrable capability in the use of CAE Design tools (Xilinx EDK, Xilinx ISE, Xilinx XST, Mentor Graphics HDL Designer, Precision Synthesis, ModelSim)
  • Inherent drive to be part of gaining and spreading knowledge throughout the team to improve its medium/long term capability
  • Ability to communicate through presentations, verbally and via written reports
  • Strong personal abilities with a focus on and desire to achieve the delivery of tasks to schedule
What would you get?
Competitive salaries, flexible working, paid overtime (subject to level), a comprehensive pension scheme, an employee funded voluntary private healthcare scheme, sporting activities, fantastic site facilities, bonus schemes (subject to level) and superb learning and development opportunities.
