Principal Product Safety Engineer

Are you looking to apply your safety engineering knowledge and expertise to the design of cutting edge systems for the UK's existing and future submarine fleet? BAE Systems is looking for a Principal Product Safety Engineer to join the Combat Systems team based in the South of England.

As a Principal Product Safety Engineer you will be carrying out a range of safety engineering activities and analyses on all areas of the combat system, including navigation, command and control, and communication systems. This work will contribute to the development and maintenance of Def Stan 00-56 safety cases, to demonstrate that the safety risk of operating and maintaining this equipment is as low as reasonably practicable.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Product Safety Engineer will involve:

Developing functional safety justifications for systems including communications, above water surveillance, and command and control to support Def Stan 00-56 safety case development

Organising and chairing hazard identification workshops and safety committee meetings

Carrying out and analysing results of studies such as failure mode analysis, fault tree analysis, and reliability centred maintenance (RCM) to gather evidence to support the safety case

Engaging with third parties such as equipment or system suppliers to gather supporting safety case evidence

The production and maintenance of safety case documentation (plans, policies and reports) to support project milestones

Developing and defining safety requirements

Conducting Risk Management in accordance with Def Stan 00-56

Mentoring and supporting junior engineers

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Product Safety Engineer:


Demonstrable experience in safety engineering/ product safety and activities contributing to the production of safety cases

Experience in defence industry or a closely related field

Broad knowledge of industry safety standards (such as Def Stan, IEC, Mil Stan or similar)


Experience with combat systems and/or maritime industry

Relevant engineering qualification such as BEng/ MEng or equivalent
