The Operational technology standards engineer is a key role within the Operational Technology Standards team, and the only source of Real Time Systems (RTS) and automation standards for the Distribution and Transmission business.

The successful candidate will be responsible for development, reviewing, and maintaining the standards, specification, and technical assurance of all field based RTS and automation equipment for the distribution business. The equipment typically includes substation telemetry and automation systems including RTUs, PLCs, SCADA and communications systems.The successful candidate will work with others to develop and roll-out automation, protection, real-time systems and telecommunications into an Operational Technology solution for the future.

You will have a strong knowledge of the operation of electricity distribution / transmission networks and a good understanding of statutory, regulatory & license requirements, industry wide codes, network and engineering standards. Extensive experience of Real Time Systems and Automation systems applied to Power Distribution or Transmission systems is essential and a strong knowledge of telemetry systems and communication technology.
The role will require you to develop and implement engineering strategy and be motivated and driven to succeed. An understanding of the governance applied to safety critical engineering processes and a thorough understanding of Risk Assessment and mitigation processes applied to engineering processes is essential.

You will be an excellent team player and be comfortable engaging with key stakeholders across the business, an ability to influence and persuade managers with SSEN and the wider SSE to do the right thing is key, excellent written and verbal communication skills are paramount.

To be successful you will hold a Degree or HND in an Engineering Communications and / or IT based subject, preferably working towards CEng level of professional registration. In addition, a safety qualification such as IOSG would be advantageous to have.
