Principal Product Safety Engineer

Would you like to play a key role working on unique and exciting projects delivering product safety for the Spearfish Torpedo? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Product Safety Engineer at our site in Broad Oak, Portsmouth.

As a Principal Product Safety Engineer you will sit within product and Training Services (PT&S). This group works on radars and torpedo manufacture and support. BAE Systems is the sole supplier of Stingray and Spearfish. The Spearfish (which is the main weapon on UK in service submarines) now requires an upgrade, which is a five year programme. You will work with design changes and upgrades, as well as looking at existing systems for support and maintenance issues.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Product Safety Engineer will involve:

Providing credible advice and guidance to the project team on product safety, product environmental, COSHH and other occupational safety issues

Ensuring that safety and environmental considerations are an integral part of the design process and taking cognisance of the whole product lifecycle

Preparing, maintaining and managing the implementation of project Safety and Environment Management Plan (SEMP) expand to ensure that product safety can be managed in a cost-effective manner

Cultivating the safety argument for all products and services delivered by the project, employing all required facts of the product safety lifecycle as defined in the project SEMP and in accordance with the Maritime Services Product Safety Policy

Ensuring that the standards of Product Safety and Product Environmental defined by statutory, business and customer requirements are observed in the design of the Product(s) produced by, or resulting from the project (e.g. JSP430, JSP520, Def Stan 00-56)

Your skills and qualifications:


Knowledge of the complete engineering lifecycle with demonstrable experience of operating in most phases

Demonstrable track record of managing and delivering product safety/product environmental tasks

Experienced in ensuring design reviews and technical bid reviews are supported by the generation of appropriate product safety claims and evidence

HNC/HND/Degree within an Engineering and or Safety discipline or equivalent qualification or experience

Hold relevant knowledge of applicable legislation and standards (e.g. HASAW, JSP430, COSHH)


Knowledge of the whole product safety lifecycle

Hazard Management knowledge

Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Event Tree Analysis (ETA) and SWIFT (Structured What IF Techniques)
