Radiation Protection Physicist in the Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection Unit (HSE), Radiation Protection Group (RP), Accelerators and Sites Section (AS).

You will join:

The Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit, which acts in matters of safety and the protection of personnel and environment. The Radiation Protection Group protects workers and public against the risks of exposure to ionising radiation, ensuring that exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable. The duties of CERN's Radiation Protection Group include the assessment of radiation hazards of CERN's activities, including accelerators and experiments, the definition of protective measures as well as the legally required monitoring of the exposure of radiation workers to ionising radiation.

As a Radiation Protection Physicist in the RP-AS Section, you will monitor and enforce compliance with radiation protection regulations and execute projects, studies and services aimed at protecting people and the environment from the ionising radiation generated by CERN's activities. In particular, you will:

  • Lead and take responsibility for RP risk assessments and for the definition of protective measures to minimize the exposure of people and the environment to ionising radiation generated by CERN's activities.
  • Provide expertise on RP matters to CERN departments and management on radiation protection aspects of the design, operation and maintenance of accelerators and experiments.
  • Lead or participate in RP research and development with a view to the development, use and maintenance of models, computer codes, state-of-the-art tools, instruments and methods for radiological risk assessments.
  • Produce, contribute to or edit legal, technical and scientific documentation, including rules, specifications, reports, notes, international publications and presentations for internal/external use.
  • Supervise or coordinate the work of technical personnel, post-docs, associates and students.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Demonstrated experience in operational radiation protection at high energy accelerators and experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience in radiation protection of the design of high energy accelerators and experiments
  • Expert knowledge and experience in the use of Monte Carlo radiation transport codes, especially FLUKA.
  • Proven skills in writing technical and scientific documentation, including rules, reports and international publications.
  • Thorough knowledge of national radiation protection legislation or relevant European regulations.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Radiation protection design study.
  • Knowledge of radiation exposure and protection.
  • Simulation of radiation environments: calculation of activation and dose rates around high energy accelerators.
  • Knowledge of measurement techniques for ionising radiation.

The language competencies required are:

  • English: spoken and written, with the ability to draw-up technical specifications, and/or to make oral presentations.
  • Ability to understand French or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.
