STFC’s ISIS facility is a world-leading source of pulsed neutrons and muons. The facility performs cutting edge research into the structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level.
About The Role
We now have exciting new opportunities for Mechanical Development Engineers to join the ISIS Design Division, working closely with fellow engineers and scientists to specify, design, procure and develop bespoke mechanical and electrical equipment and complex systems for the facility.
Our engineers are responsible for taking top level development ideas and managing the complete development process through engineering concept, design, procurement, installation/commissioning, testing and final reporting.
Further responsibilities will include:
- carrying out engineering calculations and simulations to ensure the development brief is met
- preparing work instructions for staff carrying out development and test programmes
- managing tendering, procurement and delivery of approved designs, equipment and services
- presenting reports on designs and test programmes for peer and stakeholder review
- managing multi-disciplinary staff carrying out programmes of development and testing.
You will be appointed at either Band D (Engineer) or Band E (Senior Engineer) of STFC’s staffing hierarchy, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.
You will be qualified to HNC/HND or degree level along with relevant experience or equivalent.
ISIS uses a wide range of technologies, from RF cavities and magnetic components, through to materials used in extreme environments. You will need a broad understanding of mechanical engineering and specific in-depth knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
- RF cavities
- magnetic elements (AC or DC)
- high Vacuum engineering
- precision alignment
- materials engineering
- precision motion
- remote handling of radioactive materials.
You will also have experience of developing test programmes within a highly complex technical environment.
You should be able to demonstrate experience in performing engineering calculations and simulations and the use of 3D modelling and 2D drawing packages to ensure that a development brief is met.
You will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a highly organised approach to work, be self-motivated, innovative and inquisitive, with a desire to gain new skills in a broad range of areas.
To be considered for this position you will have the above skills and experience as well as the following:
You will be qualified to degree level, possibly chartered engineer status and with significant experience in an area of responsibility, managing and directing staff engaged on development projects.
It would be desirable to have experience in financial planning/budget control and an understanding of other related engineering disciplines.
