This is a unique opportunity to take on a leading role within an internationally respected team, influencing transport security policy through science and technology.

The Department for Transport is bringing Britain closer together and boosting economic growth and opportunity by improving journeys and ensuring safe, secure and sustainable transport. Working closely with partners across Government, the transport industry and internationally, our Transport Security Coordination and Operational Response Directorate is instrumental in improving transport security, and delivering the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy.

We are looking for two exceptional scientists to join the National Security Science and Research Division We provide scientific and technical advice across a wide range of disciplines, from physics and chemistry to engineering, human factors and ergonomics and look for new solutions to transport security challenges. You will take the lead on an area of the research programme, ensuring delivery of high quality research outputs.  Colleagues across government will rely on your advice, and you will ensure that knowledge of science and technology underpins UK transport security policy. Working with a range of suppliers and stakeholders, you will deliver high impact research projects and operational trials, and influence a host of wider research and development programmes. Along the way, you will enjoy the reward of seeing the real, positive impact your work makes for the travelling public

While you are undoubtedly a technical expert, we do not expect you to have expertise specific to transport security science and technology and we can provide relevant. What matters most is your proven ability to understand and use new science and technical information, twinned with your track record of managing and delivering research projects. You will also need the ability to respond quickly to changes in priorities and urgent commissions, triggered by world events. It is your way with people that really sets you apart. With a flair for managing stakeholders across multiple organisations, you are adept at communicating complex scientific and technical concepts clearly and persuasively to non-specialists and experts alike.

Closing date: 16 February 2018.
