Come and join us as an Engineer to help define the future of global maritime defence capabilities and you’ll find we offer a wealth of career options and training. We currently have vacancies for Engineers at our sites in Weymouth and Filton.
The Combat System encompasses the submarine's ‘fight capability’. This includes its ability to carry out all of the below whilst remaining undetected by other parties:
- detect targets above and below the water
- circumnavigate the globe underwater
- intercept and send communications
- load and fire weapons and countermeasures
Joining the Combat Systems team will give you a unique and exciting opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills to a range of complex systems and platforms. You could be working on existing submarines such as the in-service Astute class, new classes currently in the design stage, and even future programmes which are looking at concept designs for submarines that won’t be in service for generations.
This is a development role, which will provide the opportunity to become a subject matter expert within an Engineering discipline, at the same time as working on ground-breaking projects of national importance.
Successful applicants will be supported, through on-going training and development, to ultimately, qualify for Chartered Engineer status as recognised by The Engineering Council. Particular focus is on training defined and provided by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). As an Engineer you will be:
Working with established and experienced Safety Engineers to;
- Analyse system designs for failure modes and potential risks to the submarine.
- Review 'real-world' events to understand 'what went wrong' and make sure our systems are as 'safe' as they can be.
- Maintain information tool-sets.
You will also have your own delegated tasks to pursue and manage which will help your on-the-job learning.
As an Engineer you will be expected to have the following:
Formal Engineering qualifications are not essential for these positions but to qualify you will need to demonstrate aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject matter. You will most likely be knowledgeable, experienced or working in an Engineering or Science discipline (e.g. Physics, Maths, Mechanical, Software, Electrical, Electronic, IT networks).
More importantly we are seeking engineers with the right behaviours, drive and willingness to learn and adapt.
What we're looking for in you:
You will be a proactive individual who is comfortable using their own initiative offering novel ideas and solutions to existing problems and complexities with the confidence to challenge the status quo. It is important that you are diplomatic and possess excellent communication skills as working collaboratively will be the route to achieving your potential.
