The Opportunity
An opportunity has arisen to be part of the UK Systems Capability Tools Support Team as the business deploys an international integrated collaborative engineering toolset (i.e. MatriX) to support the engineering development of complex Weapon Systems, Weapon Sub-systems and Equipment. The Systems Engineering tools are an integral part of this overall collaborative engineering toolset. In addition, the business has a High Performance Computing facility which multiple projects use in their Weapon System development and which the Tools Support Team is responsible for managing.
The Role
Taking on responsibility for a number of the Systems Engineering tools within the overall collaborative engineering toolset, ensuring their availability, future proofing and day-to-day usage by projects to develop Weapon Systems. Will require interaction and involvement with projects and project personnel to provide proactive support to address emergent and planed tool needs. Also, the formal training and learning intervention (on the job mentoring) of individuals on projects.
Key individual responsibilities include:
  • Being the prime contact for projects and project personnel needing support with Systems and other Engineering tools, their installation, configuration, availability, usage and long term management. Key tools and capabilities currently being supported by the team include:
    • DOORS
    • Rhapsody
    • Rational Team Concert
    • Matlab Simulink
    • High Performance Computing
  • There are plans and initial activities underway to introduce additional Systems Engineering tools into MBDA from the IBM CLM (Collaborative Lifecycle Management) proposition, to enhance the Configuration Management, Change Management, Requirements Management and Test Management capabilities of MBDA’s collaborative engineering toolset. You will be expected to be part of and contribute to this work.
  • Developing, delivering and maintaining guidance and training associated with the agreed tools under your portfolio.
  • In addition to supporting projects and project personnel, you will have responsibilities for supporting the business future proofing its Systems Engineering capability with tool upgrade planning and deployment activity; interacting with associated Tool Vendors.
  • There is an additional future opportunity as MatriX matures and rolls out across the business to be involved with supporting non-Systems Engineering tools and capabilities; particularly in the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) workspace and the ‘Windchill’ toolset.
    In addition:

  • Support other areas of the business such as Software Engineering and the Software Capability Group in their needs and use of common and comparable tools.
  • Support other areas of the business such as Information Management (IM) who are developing their capabilities to provide more appropriate type and levels of support of Systems Engineering tools.
  • Support the evolution and maintenance of the High Performance Computing facility which will entail gaining a deeper insight into the day-to-day support tasks and future planned activities.
  • Periodically report tool support activity including identified risks, issues, opportunities and successes to the Tools Support Lead.
  • Actively collaborate with and support other members of the Tools Support Team and members of the Project Support Team within the overall Systems Capability Support Group. The collective role and purpose of the Support Group is to support projects and the business – to be able and be recognised as providing a coherent Systems Capability Support service.
  • Be prepared to travel to support engagements with Projects, other members of the Tools Support Team, members of the Project Support Team, and other Capability Teams and Groups.
What’s in it for you?
  • The role provides opportunity to work closely with projects and project personnel, to get an understanding and appreciation of the needs for Systems Engineering Tools and how they are used. The best way to provide tool support is to understand projects and how the tools are being used.

This will involve international meetings and may involve international travel.
What’s great about the team?
  • Team members are experienced professionals with a passion and enthusiasm to proactively deploy and support Systems Engineering tools to benefit the business, projects and individuals.
  • Team members continually develop and share their knowledge and understanding of Systems Engineering tools, effective approaches to using such tools and their effectiveness and efficiencies to develop Weapon Systems.
  • The team have developed and continue to develop good working relationships with projects, and individual team member to project practitioner interaction is a key part of this.
  • An individual joining the team will have the opportunity to add to the team’s capability their experiences and ideas, to enhance and shape the teams contribution to the business and make a difference.
What are we looking for?
  • We are looking for an individual with the following essential attributes and experience:
    • Demonstrable background in Systems Engineering, with an understanding of associated tools across the system development lifecycle dealing with: Requirements, Model-Based Architecture and Design, Verification and Validation (V&V) and Support.
    • Ability to present technical information to technical audiences and engage in open discussion, as well as ‘simplify’ technical concepts for presentation to and engagement with not-so technical audiences.
    • Evidence of appropriate formal education and training associated with IT and Systems Engineering tooling and capabilities, supplemented by self-learning.
    • Demonstrable approach to personal professional development by keeping up to date in relevant technical areas, and the development of personal skills and capabilities to provide more effective service.
    • Self-sufficient, motivated and proactive supporting individuals, projects and other functions, but comfortable to share and ask for help when needed.
  • The following desirable attributes would be very welcome, to either complement and/or mitigate deficiencies in essential attributes and experience:
    • Knowledge and experience of ‘other’ tools associated with Product Development in areas other than Systems and Software Engineering that contribute to an overall integrated collaborative Product Development toolset.
    • Knowledge and experience of Product Line Engineering and associated methodology, approach and tooling aligned to ALM/CLM and PLM capabilities.
    • Development and delivery of training to large groups in a formal structured Learning and Development environment and/or to small bespoke groups and individuals.
    • Practical experience of deploying such tools on secure networks and the responsibility for appropriate licensing, user access and robust administration.
What would you get?
  • Competitive salaries, flexible working, paid overtime (subject to level), a comprehensive pension scheme, employee funded voluntary private healthcare, sporting activities, fantastic site facilities, bonus schemes (subject to level) and superb learning and development opportunities.
