Would you like to contribute to the design of ground breaking augmented reality displays within one of the most exciting defence programmes in the UK? We currently have two vacancies for Senior Optical Engineers at our site in Rochester.

As a Senior Optical Engineer, you will be joining a team of likeminded engineers and be responsible for providing technical expertise in the design of augmented reality displays and associated optical test equipment. You will be designing products for the world's most advanced commercial and military fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on some of the most innovative products in the defence industry and will offer opportunities for vertical and sideways progression.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Optical Engineer will involve:

Overseeing all optical system requirements by conducting trade-off analysis to support system architecture decisions

Undertaking the detailed design of optical sub-systems that operate as part of an overall integrated solution, including: miniature projector systems based on COTs display devices, relay lens assemblies, free-form surface definition, spectrally selective reflective visors and combiners and waveguide optics

Conducting assembly and formal photometric testing of prototype and production standard optical systems, including the testing of individual optical elements through to complete augmented reality systems

Generating detailed optical sub-system specifications to allow outsourcing of assemblies to optical subcontractors

Estimating the duration of assigned activities and reporting their progress as well as contributing task estimates into an overall optical work package manager

Your skills and qualifications:

Experience in the application of optical design tools for geometric ray tracing and the design of optical coatings and diffractive structures

Experience with the use of optics modelling tools such as ZEMAX, CodeV, FRED, TracePro and Excel is essential

Experience in the specification of optical materials, optical processes and tolerances associated with series manufacture

Demonstrable experience in photometric measurement systems to verify the performance of manufactured designs

A degree in Physics, Science or Optics based subjects or equivalent

Demonstrable experience of working at a high level of technical capability and productivity with no guidance and very minimal task definition

Experience of making sound tactical technical decisions and producing work package estimates

Demonstrable experience of performing design review assessments independently and making sound strategic technical decisions within an allocated area of responsibility

What we're looking for in you as a Senior Optical Engineer:

It is important that you are able to work as part of a larger team as well as be able to work independently. You should be able to technically guide others by mentoring team members as well as organising your own work efficiently and reporting all progress to your line manager. It is important that you enjoy being challenged and are able to demonstrate a forward thinking attitude across all aspects of your work.
